LIC Flea & Food

Hey, Brooklyn. I know that you were totally operating under the impression that you're the only borough that gets to have things like rooftop farms and independent artist showcases and stations to refill your growlers with kombucha. I know you think your Park Slope organic blogger-mommy stroller parade is the hottest shit since gluten-free sliced bread. I know that you firmly believe that you're the only spot in the city where it's ok to wear knit hats in the summer and that "homeless" is a compliment. But guess what? Queens is finally coming up in the world as a hipster powerhouse -- cuz we have a flea market now!

The Long Island City Flea & Food opened this June and happens every weekend by the LIC waterfront (a block from the famous Pepsi sign!) from 10AM to 6PM. Vendors include various purveyors of vintage clothes and housewares (like Harold and Maude Vintage), locals artists and jewelry makers, plus tons of food!
Oh my, this soft shell crabwich was awesome (I believe it was from Alobar).
So were these conch fritters from Corner Fish Market in Jamaica, Queens. Conch fritters are one of my favorite things of all time, but they're hard to find North of Florida. I flipped out when I saw them on the menu. And then I ate all of them.
My absolute favorite thing at the Flea is the Okonomiyaki from Oconomi. An Okonomiyaki is a Japanese vegetable pancake topped with pork or more veggies, plus special sauce and seaweed powder. It is one of the most delicious things I have eaten in recent memory. And for now, the only place you can find Oconomi is at the Flea! Unlike most of the other vendors, they don't have a truck or a storefront. I think it's worth going just for these things alone.

It's also worth going for the views! The LIC waterfront has gorgeous views of Manhattan, and it's right across the river from the United Nations and the Chrysler Building.

I can't wait to see what else Queens has in store for us! I love living here for the neighborhood feeling, but I'm so happy to see more and more farmers' markets, restaurants, and sweet events like the LIC Flea happening all the time. Queens > Brooklyn. Not that anyone is comparing.
