Designer in Focus: Meredith McClarty

You may have noticed that things look a little different around here. This is all thanks to lovely San Francisco-based designer Meredith McClarty, who also happens to be one of my dearest friends! Meredith created the new logo and layout for Ampersand Everything, but she also runs her own blog over at A Daily Dose, which I encourage you to check out for more beautiful design.

Meredith is pretty great, so I figured everyone should get a chance to know her better. Though she sadly lives 3000 miles away on the West Coast (the "other" coast is what they call it, yes?) and I couldn't sit down with her, I took to email and asked Meredith a little bit about her creative process and where she draws inspiration.

Where do you find inspiration?
I find my inspiration…
by reading and looking at the work of artists/designers I admire
by closing my computer and doing something creative that doesn't involve a screen—cooking, taking photos, writing
by talking to friends and family, taking walks, exploring San Francisco, traveling

What's your favorite thing you've ever designed and why?
I'm most proud of my postcard series—a personal challenge to make and mail a postcard every month. I adore snail mail, and the project has been a fun way to see my designs come to life, and a great way to keep in touch with family and friends. (June and July 2012 are two of my faves.)

What would be your dream project to work on? The sky is the limit!
There are lots of things that I'd like to try. I'd love to do a stationery line. I'd love to learn more about letterpress and calligraphy/hand lettering. I'd love to do something that gets more people excited about physical mail.

Trapped in an elevator for 12 hours with one book, one food item, and one musical artist on your iPod, what would you pick if you had the choice?
Book: 5th Avenue, 5 a.m.—I've started and stopped reading it a bajillion times. Maybe if I was stuck in a distraction-free elevator for 12 hours, I'd finally finish it.  (there's a section called "Does Edith Head give good costume?" …made me laugh)
Food: baguette and boursin (I know, I know, technically it's two items. I'm a rebel what can I say.)
Artist: Ben Folds, obvi.

Check out more of Meredith's work on her website. She's pretty much the best!
